Modern Bathroom 05

It’s been an exciting year in interior design already with new trends emerging across every room of the house. If you’re planning on building a new home or undertaking a renovation or extension project, looking at what’s trending can be a great way to find inspiration and ideas for your own spaces.

You’ll want your new or redesigned home to be timeless, so it’s important to carefully consider every trend to ensure it will stand the test of time before deciding to incorporate it into your home. Here’s a closer look at five of our favourite bathroom trends to emerge this year:

Terrazzo

Terrazzo had a bad reputation for many years there, thanks to its use across commercial spaces like shopping centre floors, but it seems to be back with a vengeance. Terrazzo is a hard-wearing and durable material made from chips of marble, glass and stone set in a cement or resin base, making it perfect for use in a high-traffic space like the bathroom.

This year we’re seeing terrazzo used in combination with white and pastel colours to add a touch of texture to the bathroom. Terrazzo-look tiles are also being used as a cost-effective alternative. The great thing about terrazzo is the ability to blend the flecks of the material to other features in the room, including tapware, fittings and accessories.

3D Tiles

This type of tile makes bold statement in your bathroom. We wouldn’t recommend covering your entire bathroom in 3D tiles as this will be far too much, but a simple feature mosaic is a great way to make your bathroom pop. There are a huge range of 3D tiles on the market, everything from printed and metallic to geometric and stone-look can be used to create a new look for your space.

Statement Basins

This is one of the biggest trends we’ve seen emerge this year. Statement basins can include anything from a brightly coloured sink or an unusually shaped bowl to a basin made from a unique material. As they are so eye-catching, these basins should be used as the focal point of the room as you don’t want to take away from the overall effect.

A whole range of styles including pastel pinks, metallic colours, floral-printed ceramic, textured glass and rustic concrete bowls are available, meaning there is room to be creative within this trend. Much like a statement cushion can make your living room pop, a statement basin will transform your bathroom.

Tapware

Brushed tapware is very popular this year, particularly in shades of white and black. Although white tapware may not be the most practical (especially in a family bathroom) they certainly look stunning when installed.

Matte black, copper and chrome tapware also remain popular and bring an earthy, industrial feeling to the space. If you’re looking at a renovation rather than a completely new build, replacing your tapware is one of the easiest ways to transform your bathroom without spending a fortune.

Timber

Timber is a great way to add warmth to an often cold, tiled room in the home. Incorporating a timber vanity, storage unit or a simple timber stool next to the bath are great ways to add a splash of the natural to your bathroom.

The best part about timber is that it complements most colours, textures and materials meaning it will fit with whatever style you’re looking to achieve. It’s also timeless, so you won’t have to worry about your bathroom going out of fashion any time soon.
